1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6: Ultimate Vintage Racer.

An air-cooled engine god will soon hit the auction block.
Back in the 1960s, Porsche ruled the racetracks of Europe, and those cars have gone down in history as some of the greatest ever. Today they’re highly sought after collectibles, and now this 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 will soon be wheeled across the stage at the RMAuction this January. It's powered by an air-cooled 210 hp six-cylinder with dual Weber carburetors, a five-speed gearbox, independent front and rear suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.

The 906 Carrera 6 was Porsche’s response to the Ferrari 206 Dino as its 904 predecessor was basically obsolete compared to the Ferrari. Known as the Carrera 6, it’s based on a light, yet very strong, tubular steel space frame and features rack and pinion steering and an engine case made from lightweight magnesium alloy. Because of its space frame and fiberglass body shell, gullwing doors were required. All told, the Carrera 6 tipped the scales at just 1,275 lbs and had a top speed in excess of 170 mph. Homologated for FIA racing as a Group 4 GT, 906-116 has had quite a motorsport history, and it was restored with 90 percent of its original parts. Photos courtesy of Pawel Litwinski/RM Auctions
