Will be available for the 2015 Z06 as well
It turns out the leaked technical paper published by SAE International was legit as Chevrolet will be offering an eight-speed automatic transmission for the 2015MY Corvette.
It's the same gearbox that will be installed in the 2015 Z06 but with different clutch and torque converter specifications to match the 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) torque generated by Corvette's naturally-aspirated V8 6.2-liter. The 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission promises to be up to five percent more fuel efficient than the previous six-speed auto 'box thanks to a new design which has reduced frictions.
The unit has four gearsets and five clutches and it is 4 kg (8 lbs) lighter compared to its predecessor as a result of using more aluminum and magnesium. Chevrolet says upshifts are performed eight-hundredths of a second faster than those of Porsche 911's dual-clutch PDK.
