Due late 2016
Preliminary details are starting to emerge about the second generation Audi Q5 scheduled to come out towards the end of 2016.
The all-new Q5 will ride on Volkswagen Group's MLB platform which will be used for lots of other Audi models ranging from the A4 all the way up to the Q7 due later this year. The smaller Q5 is expected to shave off around 100 kg (220 lbs) and will come with many of the technological innovations set to be offered on the upcoming second-gen Q7.
Audi's matrix LED headlights which made their debut on the facelifted A8 will likely be offered as optional equipment on the new Q5, together with TT's Virtual Cockpit design which will eliminate many of the buttons since most of the controls will be handled via a generous digital display.
It will be available with more economical four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, along with a frugal plug-in hybrid variant encompassing an e-quattro system. Chances are this setup will feature a conventional engine powering the front wheels and an electric motor to drive the rear ones, while regenerative braking will be supported.
The all-new Audi Q5 is expected to go on sale by late 2016 and will be followed most likely in 2017 by a more practical Q6 rather than a sportier version as seen in BMW's X5 & X6 duo.
