It was the car designed to give a beat down to Ferrari at Le Mans. And it accomplished its mission gloriously. The Ford GT40 has become one of the most valuable and sought after race cars of all time, often fetching millions of dollars at auction. The first GT40 hit the track in 1964 at the Nurburgring, and with the help of Carroll Shelby, went on to deliver a series of Le Mans victories. And now a GT40 MkII is featured in this video taken at the Simeone Museum.
Powered by a 7.0-liter V8, it’s famous for its participation in Daytona in 1967. There was a mechanical problem, however, which forced the two competing MkIIs to be sidelined, thus allowing Ferrari to proceed to victory. The GT40 MkII is still rare, and it’s not every day one is started up and taken for a spin.
