2016 Ford Taurus to be based on the Fusion, feature a significant weight reduction

Should go on sale in the third quarter of 2015

The Ford Taurus has languished for years but it sounds like the next-generation model will be a significant improvement over its predecessor.
According to Edmunds, the redesigned Taurus will ride on the same platform that underpins the Fusion. However, the architecture will reportedly be widened and extended to create a more accommodating cabin.
We can also expect a significant weight reduction which is desperately needed. As the website points out, the Taurus SHO tips the scale as a hefty 4455 lbs (2,020 kg) which puts it in the same ballpark as the Audi A8 L.
Engine options remain a mystery but we wouldn't be surprised if the Taurus was equipped with an assortment of EcoBoost engines. They will likely be paired to a new nine-speed automatic transmission which should improve performance and fuel efficiency.
If everything pans out, the Taurus should go on sale in the third quarter of 2015 as a 2016 model.
