Ferrari engines to power high-end Alfa Romeo RWD sedans and SUVs starting 2016

Sources close to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have disclosed some juicy details about using Ferrari-developed engines in upcoming Alfa Romeos.

Reports about Fiat's plans to put Alfa Romeo back on the map have been circulating on the web for several years and today we add another more interesting page to that book. It seems Ferrari will be in charge of developing engines for Alfa's upcoming rear-wheel drive sedan and crossover/SUV models. However, these engines will only power the high-end variants of the cars.

Earlier this week we found out Alfa Romeo will allegedly introduce seven all-new models by 2018, not taking into account next year's 4C Spider. In 2016 the Italian company will launch a Spider revival which will share its platform with the next-gen Mazda MX-5/Miata, followed in 2017 by sedan and wagon derivatives of the Giulia and Alfetta. A crossover is planned also that year while an SUV is rumored to come out sometime in 2018.

The MiTo and Giulietta are going to be axed and all these new models will also be available through Jeep's 1,700-dealer network outside North America as a move to broaden Alfa Romeo's presence.

On May 6 we will be able to provide more details when parent company Fiat will offer full details about an industrial plan concerning the group. According to Giuseppe Berta, a professor at Bocconi University and ex-chief of Fiat's archives, "this is the last chance for Alfa Romeo" and "his [Sergio Marchionne] best chance is Ferrari engines and Italian design" to tackle the German rivals.
