Built specifically for China’s ultra-wealthy Taipan clients
The Geneva Motor Show sees its fair share of ugly tuning jobs and this year is no exception as Carlsson has announced plans to introduce their CS50 Versailles at the annual event.
Designed to appeal to modern-day Bond villains and those blessed without the gift of sight, the CS50 Versailles is a limited edition model that pays "tribute to the French aristocratic way of life."
The car is based on the Mercedes S-Class has a shimming exterior thanks to more than 1,000 sheets of gold leaf which were applied in a process that took over 200 man hours. Despite the delicate nature of gold leaf, Carlsson says the car goes through an extensive drying and sealing process to ensure a "unique and perfect finish whose practicality and durability is comparable to that of conventional paint."
The ghastly gold theme continues in the cabin as 278 interior components - including everything from the speaker grilles to the steering wheel - have been coated in approximately €12,000 ($16,570) worth of gold. The model can also be equipped with a number of bespoke options including a humidor, HD displays and a REVOX sound system - among other things.
Three different models will be available and the range-topping CS65 Versailles has a twin-turbo V12 engine that has been tuned to produce 700 HP (515 kW) and 1050 Nm (774 lb-ft) of torque.
Production will mercifully be limited to 25 units and pricing ranges from €268,000 - €395,000 ($370,000 - $545,340)
