Now Audi is Telling BMW to Shove It

The German-built luxury car market is more competitive than ever.
Last winter, we reported the new Mercedes-Benz CLA was kicking BMW’s ass in the sales race thanks partially to the success of its new CLA. And now Audi is claiming that it has outsold BMW globally in the first two months of 2014. A total of 242,400 Audis were sold through February, 383 more than BMW. What’s significant is that this time last year Audi was trailing BMW by 429 units. This is yet another sign of the Volkswagen Group’s global sales gains in its quest to become the world’s number one automaker by 2018.

Along with a thriving North American market, VW Group needs to be on top in luxury car sales as well. In 2014 alone, Audi is planning to launch 17 new or revamped models, such as the third-generation TT. These reveals are part of a new plan to invest some $30.5 billion over the next five years in order to ensure continued growth. But don’t think for a moment that BMW and Mercedes are going to give up easily. Mercedes, for example, has grown at a faster pace recently than its two German rivals. This battle is far from over.
