Volvo launches project Drive Me, 100 autonomous cars hit the road in Gothenburg

Paving the way for autonomous driving technology to go mainstream

Following in announcement in December, Volvo has confirmed their autonomous Drive Me project is underway in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The project consists of 100 autonomous prototypes which will be driven in everyday conditions on roads in and around Gothenburg. Approximately 50 km (31 miles) of roadways will be part of the test and they include everything from commuter arteries to motorways that are subject to frequent queues.
While other companies are already working on their own autonomous driving systems, Volvo say project Drive Me is notable because it brings all key players - including legislators, transport authorities and customers - to the table.
According to Volvo Technical Specialist Erik Coelingh, “The test cars are now able to handle lane following, speed adaption and merging traffic all by themselves. This is an important step towards our aim that the final ‘Drive Me’ cars will be able to drive the whole test route in highly autonomous mode."
