2015 Mercier-Jones Supercraft is the Veyron of Hovercrafts

For the man that’s grown tired of his supercar collection.
If you’re in the market for a hovercraft and you have the sort of coin that keeps a supercar in your garage, look no further than the 2015 Mercier-Jones Supercraft. Dubbed the Bugatti Veyron of air-cushioned vehicles, its Chicago-based creator insists it can travel up to speeds of 80 mph on “land, ice, sand, water, and everything in between.” With a liquid-cooled 60-hp two-rotor gas engine and twin electric motors powered by a lithium-ion battery, the Supercraft is rated at 102 horsepower.

That gives it a 120-mile range at 40 mph, while cruising seven inches above ground. Thanks to a chromium-alloy tube chassis and composite hull, the Supercraft weighs just 700 pounds and Mercier-Jones is confident it will smash both the 56.25 hovercraft land-speed record and the waters-speed record of 86.5 mph. A thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.208 equals that of a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Priced at $75,000 a piece, the first Supercrafts will be available in May with 10 Collector’s Edition models planned before rolling out a further 50 units in the fall.
