When the VW Golf R 400 Concept broke cover at the Beijing Motor Show, we thought “that's great, but it will never be built.” Then VW came out and said the 400-horsepower super hot-hatch would be put into production. Again, we dampened our excitement. “That's great, but it will never come with 400 ponies,” we muttered. According to Car and Driver, it appears we were right, but not in the way we anticipated. That's because VW has revealed the ultra-hot-hatch “could make more than 400 horsepower.” Yikes.
R&D chief Heinz-Jakob Nuesser made this revelation in front of two of the carmaker's big wigs, so it's safe to assume this is a done deal. VW claims the R 400 can sprint from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed limited to 174 mph. Just think what those numbers will be with more than 400 ponies.
