The Importance of Air-Cooled Porsche 911s

Perhaps Porsche got things right the first time around.

It’s a debate that Porsche 911 enthusiasts have never let die, and likely never will. Back in 1998, Porsche did the unthinkable for many die-hard 911 fans: it dropped the air-cooled flat-six in favor of a water-cooled engine. This was sacrilegious for those guys, and some still haven’t forgiven Porsche for the swap. Although today’s 911 remains the performance benchmark, there’s still a market for the air-cooled 911s. In fact, demand today for classic 911s before the 996 is hotter than ever.

Prices are now hitting an all-time high. Why is that exactly? There are a number of reasons, but it likely boils down to this: enthusiasts- young and old- just want a pure sports car with character.
